When Family Comes First

January 11th, 2022

Over the last several months I've been put through the ringer. All of a sudden, I have become my mother's caregiver.

Back in late summer mom came down with some intestinal issues that caused her to go to the emergency room. The first time around they didn't find anything. Two weeks later we're back to the emergency room and this time along with the intestinal issue she has also developed AFIB (Atrial Fibrillation) which is irregular and often very rapid heart rhythm (arrhythmia) that can lead to blood clots in the heart as well as

New Photo Art Collages

October 27th, 2021

I love being creative, finding new ways to show off my photography!

My latest project is creating photo art collages.

So here's the thing. I love making backgrounds that I use for my photoshoots, using joint compound, wallpaper, and stencils. I love all the textures and details that they create. So I wondered how it would look if I used the same technique but incorporated one of my photos.

The Key photo was my....

If They Could Talk

September 15th, 2021

Antique shopping is my favorite kind of shopping. I'm always looking for something different and unique as well as adding to my various collections one of them being my vintage bottles. I find these bottles so interesting with the various colors, shapes, designs and what they were used for.

If these vintage bottles

Doctor Fettermans Office

September 8th, 2021

My favorite kind of shopping is antique shopping. Once a month or so, I head out to my favorite antique shops to see what's new and what will inspire my next photoshoot.

With this photograph, I found some great finds. The journal was used, by a local apothecary shop that kept track of the medicines and drugs sold to the local doctors.

The other finds were the

Trapped

September 1st, 2021

Sometimes life has this habit of throwing curveballs to see if you're paying attention or staying on track.

A book I read recently, "The Starless Sea," inspired this photograph, and I love how it turned out.

The other day I was looking at this photograph, and at that moment, it felt like I was trapped. All those keys of opportunity...

Love Working With Ranunculus

August 25th, 2021

The ranunculus flowers are so beautiful. They can be photographed in all kinds of lighting with any kind type of backdrop and still look gorgeous.

Their colors are varied, soft pinks, bright pinks, oranges, yellows, peach and, white. The ranunculus has layers of petals that are soft a delicate. As a cut flower, they last for a very long time. These are the many reasons I love

New Backdrops

August 18th, 2021

I love creating backdrops for my photoshoots. It allows me to create what I have envisioned for a particular photoshoot.

Making these backdrops are time-consuming, so I do need to plan my shoots ahead of time. I can then make more than one at a time.

Visit my "Making My Own Backgrounds" post for more information on how I made them.

To give you a quick breakdown of how I made the backdrops below.

Materials you will need primer, brush, hardboard

Doorknobs

August 12th, 2021

In "The Starless Sea," there are different stories behind each door. Behind one of these doorknobs is a story waiting to be told by you. What would it be?

The stories that you can tell if you use your imagination! Where do I want to go?

When I opened the door, Before me was this

Three Keys

August 4th, 2021

I've recently taken a workshop called "Illustrated." The theme of this workshop is to read books and get inspired through different passages in the book. Then create a photograph using the passages you chose in the book that sparked your imagination, how you might see it in your mind's eye.

I have to say I was a bit

Iceland Poppies

July 28th, 2021

Back in April, I had purchased a bouquet of Iceland Poppies from Farmgirl Flowers. They came in excellent condition, and I was anxious to photograph them.

The poppies were gorgeous with beautiful textures in the petals, beautiful colors of peach, white, pink, and orange. They didn't last long

Cookies and Tea Please But Not For Me

July 21st, 2021

I love chocolate chip cookies! Who doesn't? Now I will love chocolate chip cookies in photographs only.

This "Cookies and Tea Please" photograph was inspired by "The Starless Sea" book I read. The passage was the college students were having a gathering in the library and, the hostess was bringing tea and cookies. When I photographed this, I ate way too many cookies! I photographed this before my weight loss.

I just wanted to touch on a few things about my weight loss that I forgot to mention in my "Major Accomplishment" post. First, I didn't develop any exercise plan because I hate

Major Accomplishment

July 14th, 2021

For years I've struggled with my weight, trying to get the weight off! I've tried many different diets as well as exercise, only to lose 2 pounds a month. Yes, I know that is normal but, it was too frustrating for me.

Back in 2007, I was about 60 plus pounds overweight. I tried to lose it, but I wasn't having any luck. At that time, I started developing gall bladder issues which meant I needed to watch what I ate. That meant no more junk food and eating like a rabbit, but eating like a rabbit got the weight off. Unfortunately, the gall bladder issue didn't resolve and, I had it removed. And guess what I could eat whatever I wanted! And yes, all the weight and then some came back. For years I lived with it.

Until my doctor told me

I'm Back and See What's New

July 7th, 2021

I've been off the grid for quite a while dealing with life's ups and downs and everything in-between, as with most of you.

But things are getting better. Although I haven't been around on social media, I have been busy creating and learning new things.

I've done a lot of experimenting with different kinds of art mediums recently, such as learning some botanical illustrating, abstracts using acrylic or oil or watercolor paints, which were all fun, but not want I wanted. That's when I realized that photography is my true calling. I have found doodling to be quite fun and relaxing. I have found

Baby's Breath

November 18th, 2020

To start this photo shoot I had purchased these beautiful baby's breath and wasn't quite sure how I wanted to portray them. The background I chose was my first choice, then proceeded to find a vessel to put these lovely little flowers in. After many changes I chose this black milk jug that worked well with the background.

Now it was time to set up the base or table. I added the blue fabric for some color then used my favorite linen table cloth and lace doily.

Now for some details...I had found

Not Sure What To Feel Or What To Do Next

November 11th, 2020

When 2020 began I was so excited for the year to come. Excited about new art shows and creating lots of new artwork. I was ready for a very productive and profitable year. But just the opposite happened.

Everything came crashing down when Covid-19 reared it's ugly head. Like many of you I kept hoping it would end soon, but it didn't. I kept waiting and waiting for a glimmer of hope, but nothing...I wanted to go shopping for props, flower, paint and craft supplies, but going out wasn't an option. So I started into a routine wearing my mask and slowly started to venture out when shops were allowed to open.

All The Stories To Be Told In One Photograph

October 28th, 2020

What kind of story can you get from this photograph or for that matter how many?

I love creating photographs that can tell a story or sparks a memory. Creating these photographs allows me to let my imagination go...

The concept for this photograph is "A Walk In My Garden". In my garden I have birdhouses and I love watching the different birds and identifying new birds as well as gardening and cutting flowers to photograph. With these thought in mind I then decide what I need for props and what type of background I want. Now I start putting the story

Halloween Stories With Photography and Paintings

October 21st, 2020

One of my favorite holidays! I love watching all the old horror movies and learning about Halloween's history. But what I really love is creating art work that reminds me of Halloween. Challenging my imagination to create a photograph or painting the represents Halloween.
Here are some photographs and fluid art paintings that remind

Everything Comes To A Halt

October 15th, 2020

So I've been on vacation and during that time I had every intention on doing a lot of photo editing and preparing for my metallic collection. Well the collection is coming along nicely, but unfortunately I won't have it ready in time for my November launch. Why...it's called technology. Unfortunately my computer has decided that lightroom and photoshop upgrades were too

My Photos, My Fluid Art Paintings, My Stories

October 15th, 2020

My art tells my story. You could learn a lot about a person through their art.
Every one of this images tells a story about me.
Looking at these images you could say that I like flowers, seashells, collecting old things, scary things, fishing, painting abstracts, bold colors,

Dad's Gone Fishing

June 15th, 2020

I remember growing up when dad on the weekends would be up and out of the house heading to his favorite fishing hole before us kids were out of bed. He'd come home with his catch for the day and a sunburn except around his eyes where he wore is aviator style sunglasses. I miss his fishing stories and the fish that got away.
I have dad's old fishing tackle box

New Website

June 8th, 2020

New Website

Well I have spent about a week in a half revamping my website. You can now purchase our photography and fluid art paintings there. Super excited and thrilled with the way it turned out. Although I will say there are some things I wish were better, but because of the set up of this site, I do have

What's Been Happening

June 1st, 2020

What

I hope you are all doing well. A lot has changed in the past 5 months. I haven't been around since late January. I've been adapting to a new way of life like many of you and I've been busy creating.
Over these last 5 months I've been doing a lot of thinking about where I want to be with my photography and fluid art. I love doing both, but for the longest time I couldn't decide on whether or not to keep the fluid art. Photography has always been my first love and will continue to be, but I have grown quite attached to fluid art. I started fluid art paintings when I got myself in a serious rut with my photography and while looking for inspiration I found fluid art. So here's the scoop..

Two Of My Favorite Things

June 10th, 2019

Day 1
Photography and gardening are two of my favorite things to do, but lately my photography has been taking more of my time and unfortunately the gardens have suffered. A lot of my floral photography comes from my gardens. So I needed to figure out how to keep them and still do my photography.
So this year I've decided to downsize my gardens to a more manageable level. I'm keeping my front perennial garden, my peony garden,

Going Through The Archives

June 3rd, 2019

Most photographers myself included have photos that they've taken and have tried to process them, but that photo was missing something, but you like it enough to keep it. So for now that photo heads to the archives until that one day you have some extra time to go through those archives.
That's what happened

Also if you haven't already subscribe to my email list and get all the latest updates, newsletters, promotions and more. You can follow me on Facebook and Instagram too. Check out my June Newsletter.

I'm On A Roll

May 29th, 2019

This got me excited to work on a new series "Vintage Tools". Coming soon.

Masquerade Invitation Part 2

May 23rd, 2019

In step 7 I slightly torn the edges of the photographs and touched them up with some pan pastels to give them that aged look. I then glued down the metal lace pieces which were a bit tough since they didn't want to lay flat and I also glued the skull and cross bones. Once those were all dried which I left over night I add a tiny skeleton key in the center of the metal lace. I also added 3 small rose lace pieces at the ends

I Won

May 20th, 2019

Every now and then I see a contest and enter a photograph or two depending on the contest rules. Often times I enter these contests and never win because of so much competition. But this past week I entered a contest "Weekly Photography Challenge Vintage Old Style". I scanned through my photographs and found the "Sewing Room" that met the criteria and entered it

Masquerade Invitation Part 1

May 16th, 2019

I've been practicing my mixed media collages using my photography....it's been slow, but it's getting there. In the photos following you'll see the steps I took from beginning to end. Really though the beginning is an idea, then I go through my bits and pieces of materials that I've collected and see what works and what doesn't. Sometimes I have to hit the craft stores to find what else I want. I photograph each idea then look through them to decide which one I like best, kind of like a story board. Often times I

Total Chaos

May 13th, 2019

So for the last month in a half we put our house on the market and then took it back off. For all kinds of reasons which I won't go into. During that time I had packed up a lot of my things for selling purposes and I fully expected to be moving, when in fact I've created total chaos and had to unpack everything. So the past week I've spend time painting my bedroom and redesigning my studio in hopes of

Fishing Lure Series

Talk About Multi Tasking

April 4th, 2019

Trying Out Mixed Media

March 18th, 2019

A few years back when I was very much into acrylic fluid pouring paintings, I had bought a ton of canvases in all different sizes, but since I've found my niche in photography all those canvases are just hanging around waiting to

Red Raspberries

March 14th, 2019

Been practicing my still life food photography. Not as easy as it looks, but with some patience and time everything came together nicely with this raspberry shoot.

Making Altered Books

March 11th, 2019

Here's a fun project I started. I'm always looking for props for my still life photography and books are a big part of a lot of my still life. When I hit the antique shops I keep a eagle eye out for some good old vintage books. You know how you get an idea in your head of what you want and won't give up till you find it. Well I have that problem with books. I have found a few small ones, but I wanted something

Imagination

March 7th, 2019

Imagination

What I really love about doing still life photography is creating different stories. What I mean is I get to express myself with all the different things that I enjoy. Like flowers, gardening, baking, holidays, and what ever else inspires my imagination. And that's it in a nutshell! My imagination....I have a great imagination and sometimes words don't say what I see...so creating a still life story gets it out there with the help of a few words.
For example I love Halloween! It's one of my

Cabin Fever

March 4th, 2019

The last month or so I've had a bad case of cabin fever. I know living in Maine the winters can be long, but this winter for some reason is really bringing on the blues. I think I can speak for many of us when I say....it's time

Roses and Lace

February 7th, 2019

Roses and Lace is by far one of my favorite images so far this year! I just love how everything fell into place. The slightly aged pink and white mini roses cascading down the side, the placing of the lace ribbon, the vintage books.

My Dad

January 21st, 2019

The photograph above is my dad when he was in the army back in the 40's I think.
My dad was an artist. I often found him sketching in his drawing pad all kinds of images. Like fish in a stream, or caricatures of our pets mostly our cat and women figures.
I cannot draw like my dad did, but I draw

Mushrooms Out Back

January 17th, 2019

This year there were quite a few mushrooms scattered about the property. Some were large and some were small. They were a lot of fun to photograph.
But mushrooms are not good for our dogs. They are poisonous

Every spring I look forward to seeing my Columbine. In my garden they bloom just after the bleeding hearts are nearly done for the season. I also grow white and purple columbines too. I've seen mini columbines

Love In The Mist

Love In The Mist is a somewhat strange looking flower yet very delicate and beautiful. One of my favorite annual flowers.
Usually my floral photographs are soft, bright and bold, but this time I wanted to try something different and

Alstroemeria

January 7th, 2019

How many different ways can one photograph alstroemeria? As you may have seen I photograph these beauties quite often. For many reasons...one they are beautiful, two they come in a variety of colors,

2018-2019

January 3rd, 2019

As I've mentioned in previous posts I've made many changes toward my journey as a photographer.
My accomplishments in 2018 is that I found my artistic style as a photographer. At which point I've created a 5 year business plan

2019 Is Just Around The Corner

December 10th, 2018

Well in just a few weeks Christmas will be here and then 2019. Wow where has the time gone! One minute it's spring, then summer, fall just flew by and barely happened since we've been getting snow here in Maine almost the whole month of November and here is it just weeks from Christmas and 2019. I have no words.
I will say though that this year has

Christmas in Maine

Road Block

December 3rd, 2018

Did you ever run into that infamous Road Block! The one that won't let you pass....the one that you keep running into no matter how hard you try to get around that road block!
As an artist I do occasionally run into those road blocks, but am able to get around them pretty easily, but not this time. Maybe I'm trying too hard...maybe there is too much going on now with the holidays and all? As hard as I try to break through that road block it just keeps getting harder and harder! There were a couple of times I thought I might have broken through, but no....what does one do when you can't get through the road block? Stop!

Angel

November 27th, 2018

A few years ago I was looking around the city of Bangor here in Maine for a photograph I needed for a gallery showing. The gallery was very specific that the photograph had to be somewhere in Bangor. So I went to one of my favorite places to photograph....the Mount Hope Cemetery. Yes I know it sounds weird

November 8th, 2018

Okay I know a lot of you may not like gray squirrels because of their mischievous behavior, but isn't he the cutest!!! Although I will say he did tried to steal a small black pouch I had on the picnic table, which I recovered or maybe I should have let him have

A Year Of Change

November 5th, 2018

As teenagers we sometimes feel time is going so slow and we wanted to hurry up a grow up. Now as adults time is moving far too fast and we would love for it to slow down a bit.
As I continue to grow as an artist I find that time is just passing

Working On A New Project

Check it out! What does a griddle, stencils, and various scrapbooking papers and ephemera have in common? Well you'll just have

V

October 29th, 2018

This is the largest to date fluid art painting I've created. An 18x24 and I have to say I was very intimidated by the size and if I had enough paint to cover the canvas. But I put aside any intimidation and went for it. I poured the dirty pour consisting of metallic purple, black, red and white on the canvas and started spinning it around and around on the turn table that I made, which was super easy to make.

Making My Own Backgrounds

October 25th, 2018

I've recently taken a workshop on how to create my own backgrounds. The workshop was through 2 Lil Owls. An amazing workshop that has really helped me in getting the backgrounds I need to create my still stories. The toughest part is figuring out what I need and how often will I use it. So I've tried to create several different backgrounds with different stencils and neutral colors.
The backgrounds I've created I hope

Mini Gerbera Daisies Project

October 23rd, 2018

Every still life story starts with a basic idea. Most of my stories start with #flowers. I love flowers and whenever I can incorporate them I will whether they are the story or a prop in the story. I head to my local market pick up a variety of flowers. Then I decide if the story is going to be about the flower or will they be just a part of the story. I take a look at all my props and see what story develops.
In this story I decided to use

Eruption

October 18th, 2018

This is one of my first fluid art paintings. I was trying out a tree ring pour using metallic gold, red and black. I love the way this painting turned out. It looks almost 3 dimensional. It looks better in person!
One of my many challenges in photographing these

Haunted Castle

October 15th, 2018

Welcome to Gillette's Castle. I love this castle! It's located in East Haddam, Connecticut.
I decided to process this and add a few things, but I'm undecided if I like the black and white or the color version . I would love to hear your thoughts on this one.
I studied photography in Seattle, Washington and graduated with a degree in Commercial and Industrial photography. A far cry from what I'm doing now. I remember one of my instructors telling me that my photograph

I've Been Antiquing Again

October 8th, 2018

Renovations are finally done! It finished up about a week ago and life is slowly getting back to normal.
Every since the completion of renovations I've been shopping...for the house and for future still life projects. And boy am I having fun!!!
Spent my birthday at the Vintage New England Bazaar which was good and I did find some treasures, but the one in July was much better. I also found some great deals on #Halloween treasures.
I'm always looking for good architectural

My Favorite Flowers Are....

September 24th, 2018

And are also my favorites to photograph, which is why these flowers will become staples in my #gardens.
I've been photographing all kind of flowers for years. #Flowers are amazing with their beautiful colors, petals, shapes, and smells. I get excited every spring when I see them starting to come through the soil and watch as they develop into the beauties that they are.
But over the years I have found a few that I keep photographing over and over and challenging myself to make each #photograph different from the

New Artwork Coming Soon

September 20th, 2018

What will you see that you didn't see before?
Well there will be still life photography. Something I've always wanted to do, but could never quite figure out how to put it all together, but I did and in the beginning there will be a few images at first, but plenty in the making. Each one will tell a small story. But between me and you. There could be a book in the future, but tell anyone.
I've also developed my post processing techniques using textures and presets. Learning to use my new lensbaby

Renovations

September 17th, 2018

Over the last few weeks we have been going through some renovations that were badly needed. For the most part things are going pretty smoothly, but I have 2 wonderful dogs that I love dearly except when they are barking like crazy. Riley is our Irish Wolfhound mix and the other is Lilah a Great Pyrenees mix.

Sometimes It Doesn't Work

September 13th, 2018

Many times I've scraped my fluidart painting and started over. Or I try one pouring technique and end up doing another.
Like with this painting...This one I started with just pouring layers of color which were black, gray, white and yellow directly on the canvas. I tilted and shift, but I didn't like what I was seeing....trying to save the painting I did a swipe using

Seashell Collector

September 10th, 2018

For as long as I can remember I've always loved collecting seashells. There was nothing better than walking on the beach practically by myself, listening to the seagulls, smelling the salty sea air, watching the waves come and go and looking for those beautiful little treasures that were brought in from the sea. I miss those days....

Pick Your Colors

September 6th, 2018

This first one they chose white, silver, gold, purple and aqua. I did a technique called a #dirtypour in which I layer the colors in the cup then flip it onto the canvas and start tilting and shifting until I get what I like. I like the veining the white makes in this painting.
The next one here the colors chosen where white, silver, purple and aqua. Also did a dirty pour for this one too. This one turned

Bartzella Peony

September 4th, 2018

The Bartzella Peony is a #Itoh peony also known as a intersectional peony. Which means that this peony is a cross between and herbaceous peony (plants that have no persistent woody stem above ground) and a tree peony (which has woody stems). The #Bartzella #Peony has flowers like the tree peony, but the leaves and stems are herbaceous. The blooms on this peony are huge and gorgeous!

Southwest

August 30th, 2018

Sometimes experimenting can be a good thing. I was aiming for a lot of browns, with a hint of the blue, coral, turquoise, but in fact I got more of those colors than the browns that I wanted.

Love Letters

August 27th, 2018

Here's my starting point to this love letters still story. Which didn't end this way.
Most all of my still stories have flowers in them just because I love flowers! Lately I've been finding a lot of alstroemeria in an assortment of colors. The alstroemeria below are minis which I found at my local grocery store which

Be Still My Heart

August 23rd, 2018

I absolutely love my #bleedinghearts. These beautiful delicate, but hardy plants grow so well in my shade garden. Every year they seem to double in size. They are a sure sign that spring is coming and the first to bloom in my gardens. I have several varieties. Of course the popular pink bleeding hearts,

Cherry Still Story Project

August 20th, 2018

The #creative process for me starts with pen and paper. I jot my ideas on paper and then I consider what props I need to create the still story I have in my head. I wait for a relatively sunny day since I only use natural light for my #stillstories.
I start with my backdrop, the one in the photo is one I created using masonite board, joint compound, stencils and acrylic paint. Then I put in the small vintage window that I picked up at a antique show. Picked out a pinkish gray fabric to use as a curtain and then a nice off white linen tablecloth. I've also included a bowl of

Painterly Frilled Tulip

August 16th, 2018

Painterly Frilled Tulip

I absolutely love how this frilled #tulip turned out!
Just after I completed my still stories workshop I started playing around with the props I had trying to get the feel of everything. Believe it or not this first attempt didn't turn out the way I expected, but better than I had expected.
I processed this one in Topaz Labs impressions using the Georgia O'Keefe setting. Tweaking it a bit and done! Love the soft #painterly feel on the curl of the leaf and the little flames that appear at the tips of the frills on the petals.
New artwork coming soon!

Spinning Round and Round

August 13th, 2018

As a #fluidart #painter and #photographer on a shoe string budget, I often find myself making a lot of my own things to create my #artwork. Whether it's coloring my own fabrics or making my own vintage ephemera or making my own spinning table it's fun, creative and I also get to save a few dollars and most of the time it isn't

Sanderling

August 9th, 2018

Cute little #birds these Sanderlings are. I saw this one on a trip to #Florida a few years back wandering about the

Art Deco Fluid Art Painting

August 6th, 2018

I started acrylic fluid #art #painting about a year ago and I fell head over heels in love. I love the use of colors and all the different techniques I've learned. Fluid art painting has allowed me to express another side of me. I have found that with #fluidartpainting I have no boundaries. I chose my colors and go to it. Many times I have what I would like the painting to look like in my head, but usually after

Down By The Train Tracks

July 31st, 2018

I love being down my the #railroad tracks #photographing! When I started photographing the train tracks I needed to get a different perspective on them. I mean anyone can photograph train tracks, but it was important to me to find that different view another perspective that would allow my photograph to stand out from the others. I would stand in the middle of the tracks and stare down the tracks and just look at them and I would keep looking. I knelt down

The Sewing Room

She said she was a medium or #psychic I can't quite remember which. She said she was getting some vibes from this photo and continue to say that the woman who wore this dress became very ill, and that she had suffered a long time with the illness

Need Vintage Ephemera?

July 5th, 2018

I've been having a hard time finding vintage #ephemera to use as props for my #stillifephotography projects. Sometimes I would find what I want, but it would be too expensive. I tried to make my own once and wasn't overly thrilled with the way they turned out. So I set aside the search and the creativity for a while.
The other day I decided to give my #creativity another try.
It went like this.....I used 4 cups

1945

June 28th, 2018

I've been busy working on my still life #projects. I've been practicing still life for a bit now and was having a difficult time creating what I was looking for. I enjoy still life, but wasn't getting the knack of it. I mean just putting a vase of #flowers with a simple backdrop then editing in photoshop using textures wasn't quite what I wanted. Yeah I did get some good photos, but I wasn't getting what I truly wanted. One day while scrolling through my facebook feed I discovered this fantastic photographer...….

March 23rd, 2018

Spring will arrive here in Maine.....Like so many of us I'm sooo done with winter! Old man winter go to bed and don't come back til December! Please.

In the meantime I'll be doing some indoor shooting of

Many Doorways

October 17th, 2014

Actually these "Many Doorways" are entrances to the many enlisted men's quarters.

Here's a little history about Fort Knox.

The American Revolution and the War of 1812 brought enemy British ships to the Penobscot River. During both wars, Great Britain seized control of the river, fought battles in the river valley’s towns, and claimed the surrounding land for the British crown. With America’s defeat ........see more
